2.0L engine
I have been working on an engine swap for the last few weeks. I seems there are a lot of kids who know all about
"the 2.0 swap" but few who have really done it.
Here are a few points to I have come across:
 |
Get the right engine. I have seen quite a few folks who say you can use any 2.0 VW engine. That is not quite right.
There are two distinct engines. The A3 cars all have a 2.0. |
90-92 | GLI |
| 91-92 | GTI |
This engine is pretty close, but a bit too tall to fit inside the Scirocco.
Stick with and A2 and you will have a much easier time.
|
90-92 | Passat |
Use your old 1.8 head if you can. The intake ports are not even close to the same shape as the ones in the 2.0 head.

| you can see how much thinner the area between the ports is |

you can also see my finger on the bottom left of the picture |
 | Here is the new motor ready to be "plopped" in. The valve cover was sandblasted and painted with clear paint. The metal looks gray. The intake plenum was powder coated blue where the letters on top are. |
| This is the old motor trying to come out. The Manual leaves out a few things to remove. Take off the suspension brace underneath. This will let you drop the motor and trans down far enough to get the drivers side trans mount off. | |
 | Out! Man, what a struggle. This is definitely a two person operation. One to guide the beast, and one to run the handle on the crane. |
